Suspension Glossary – Terms Simply Explained
A
-
Axle
The central connection between a vehicle’s wheels. It supports the wheels and transmits forces between the body and the road. -
Axle geometry
The alignment of wheels and axles, including toe, camber, and caster. Proper geometry ensures stability and even tire wear.
B
-
Bushings
Elastic connectors that dampen vibrations and noise between suspension components. -
Ground clearance
The distance between the road and the lowest point of the vehicle. Key for off-road capability and comfort.
D
-
Shock absorber
A suspension component that controls spring oscillations and ensures a smooth ride.
E
-
Offset (ET)
The distance between the wheel mounting surface and its center. Affects wheel positioning and vehicle dynamics.
F
-
Springs
Components that absorb shocks and road irregularities. Types include coil, leaf, and air springs. -
Strut
A combination of a spring and a shock absorber, commonly found in McPherson suspensions.
H
-
Height-adjustable suspension
A suspension system that allows manual or electronic adjustment of ground clearance. Common in sports cars and SUVs.
K
-
Stabilizer link
Connects the stabilizer bar to the wheel hubs or control arms. Reduces body roll in corners.
L
-
Steering radius
The distance between the tire center and the steering pivot. Influences handling and stability.
Q
-
Control arm
Links the wheel to the body, absorbs lateral forces, and ensures wheel guidance.
S
-
Stabilizer bar
A component that reduces body roll during cornering and improves stability. -
Sports suspension
A specially tuned suspension with stiffer springs and dampers, offering better dynamics but less comfort. -
Track
The distance between the wheels on an axle. A wider track enhances stability. -
Track widening
Additional components that increase track width, giving a sportier appearance.
T
-
Lowering
A suspension modification to bring the vehicle closer to the ground. Improves aerodynamics and cornering, but may reduce comfort.
W
-
Roll stability
The suspension's ability to minimize lateral body movements during cornering.
